Coffee Roasting & Walking Tour – Marangu Village

Experience the rich culture and breathtaking scenery of the Chagga people on the lush slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This immersive half-day walking tour in Marangu Village introduces you to centuries-old traditions, hidden waterfalls, and the art of coffee — from bean to cup.

Walk through banana plantations, explore local farms, and witness the roasting of fresh Arabica coffee beans the traditional Chagga way. It’s an authentic, grounded, and beautifully slow-paced experience — a refreshing detour from the usual safari rhythm.

Your Experience

Your guide, a local from the Marangu area, will lead you on a gentle walk through winding village paths beneath a canopy of banana and avocado trees. Along the way, you’ll learn about medicinal plants, farming techniques, and the harmonious lifestyle of the Chagga people who have lived on these slopes for generations.

Arrive at a local homestead where the real magic begins: the coffee ceremony. Here, you’ll participate in the traditional process of hand-roasting coffee beans over an open fire, grinding them with a wooden mortar and pestle, and brewing your own fresh cup of Kilimanjaro coffee. The aroma alone is unforgettable.

The tour continues with a visit to the Ndoro Waterfall, a tranquil natural gem tucked into the forest — ideal for quiet reflection or photos. You may also stop by a local banana beer brewing spot or a traditional Chagga cave used during tribal wars, depending on timing and interest.

This experience blends culture, nature, and taste — offering a full-sensory encounter with Tanzania’s coffee highlands and the people who call them home.
