5-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Altitude: 1,860m – 2,700m
Hiking Time: ~4 hours | Distance: 8 km
Habitat: Montane Forest
Start your trek at Marangu Gate, ascending gradually through lush rainforest. Look out for blue monkeys and colobus monkeys before reaching Mandara Hut for the night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
Altitude: 2,700m – 3,720m
Hiking Time: ~6 hours | Distance: 12 km
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Climb through open moorland, passing the Maundi Crater and admiring stunning views of Mawenzi Peak. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
Altitude: 3,720m – 4,703m
Hiking Time: ~6 hours | Distance: 10 km
Habitat: Alpine desert
Trek through the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a windswept desert zone with breathtaking terrain. Reach Kibo Hut by late afternoon. Early dinner and rest for the summit push.

Day 4: Kibo Hut – Summit (Uhuru Peak – 5,895m) – Horombo Hut
Altitude: 4,703m – 5,895m (Summit) – 3,720m
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours | Distance: 21 km
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
Midnight start for your summit bid. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) by sunrise and push to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha
Altitude: 3,720m – 1,860m
Hiking Time: ~6 hours | Distance: 20 km
Final descent through rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive a summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha.
